IT'S BEEN EIGHT MONTHS since the SoMo 650 handheld computer made its debut on the market, and at Socket Mobile we’ve been seeing a steady increase of interest in all the SoMo has to offer across a range of vertical industries including healthcare, automotive, retail and government just to name a few.
Here you can read some of the great things people are saying about the SoMo 650:
“The primary reason for higher TCO? People drop the dainty devices. Yet, businesses continue to deploy frail handhelds because, observes Kevin Mills, CEO of Socket Communications Inc. in Newark, Calif., managers like the initial low purchase price of the devices. Mills, whose company does business as Socket Mobile, claims his SoMo 650 handheld, while not ruggedized, is far more durable than rinky-dink consumer gadgets, saving companies money in the long run. Perhaps equally important is that the SoMo 650 is designed to have 3-5 year product lifespan, unlike consumer units that fall from fashion annually like autumn leaves.”

“I asked Kevin Mills why Socket Mobile didn't provide a consumer device priced competitively. After all, hasn't Apple pretty much bet the back 50 on iPod Touch - which is essentially a consumer grade PDA, music, and video player? Kevin provided what I thought was a great answer, but I'll have to paraphrase. He said that the consumer market was not of interest to Socket Mobile because their device was focused on durability and quality and not fashion design. The organizations who buy these lightweight industrial PDAs take months (8 to 18 months) to choose a device for their organization and then they order thousands of them. Compare that to the consumer market where people are pretty fickle. ”

“While most manufacturers are rushing to add wireless capabilities to their Windows Mobile devices, Socket Mobile Inc. has just done the opposite on purpose. The SoMo 650 M-HS is a ruggedized PDA designed for market segments where "security takes precedence," Socket says.”

“The SoMo 650 Mobile Computer might look like a generic PDA, but Socket Mobile sets the handheld apart with powerful specs and a number of pre-tested and configured peripherals that expand the mobile device’s business utility.”

“Socket's first handheld is well-conceived and well executed, the company's rationale for offering it is sound, and its reputation as a mobile systems peripherals vendor stellar. We felt this way after the product was first announced, and even more so after we've had it in our lab for a month and experienced first hand how it all fit together, and what a reliable speedy product the 650 is.”

“…while a smartphone may often be the better choice for the typical corporate knowledge worker, Socket Mobile's SoMo 650 reminds us that the stand-alone PDA is still a good platform for a variety of business applications that rely on mobility -- think medical patient care, retail merchandising and inventory, or point-of-sale.”
