Every year, Computerworld honors organizations that use technology to benefit society, and this year, Socket customer El Rio Community Health Center of Tucson, Arizona was named one of five Finalists for the healthcare category.
The non-profit community health center was honored for its free prescription delivery service, which enables better access to medications for many of its patients who are elderly, disabled, or who have young families and have challenges traveling to pharmacies to pick up medications.
In order to track medication deliveries and comply with federal HIPAA requirements for patient confidentiality, El Rio deployed an innovative mobile proof of delivery system that uses bar codes to keep prescription information anonymous. Each driver is equipped with a Palm Treo smartphone with a Socket SD Scan Card and P.O.D. Verify software, which enables them to scan medications when they are delivered and capture digital signatures. Information is sent back to headquarters in real-time.
Computerworld evaluated more than 200 international, very well-known organizations for the annual awards. El Rio was one of 44 entrants competing in the healthcare category.
